Almost Elegant no.3a-2006

The more hegemonic the system, the more the imagination is struck by the smallest of its reveals. The challange, even infinitesimal, is the image of a chain failure. Only this reversibility without a counterpart is an event today, on the nihilistic and dissaffected stage of the political. Only it mobilizes the imaginary.
-J. Baudrillard, On Nihilism. Simulacra and Simulation. pp.163

I certainly feel that way in 2006 while trying to choose the best album for 2006. There is structural effort to preserve previous styles for various reason. Something that I feel produces rather ambiguously empty soul. Enter this list. If there is anything to remember 2006, I want it to be a year where warm sound and detail can still exist, emmenating something beautiful. It should be almost magical despite a flood of simplistic pop punks and overproduced folks albums out there.

Best of wishes for 2007

    sorry about the double comment

I wanted to send you his live video from the Letterman show. I just love this guy

I think this song must be listened to with the volume turned up MAX, while driving in the car with ALL the windows rolled down!

best folk rock I’ve heard in a long time.

thanks for the youtube links. Yeah Post-War, by M.Ward is a pretty good album. Dunno why people pick Joana Newsom over that one.

PS. the spam-filter is a bit overzealous. Sorry about being late to rescue your post. We’ve been having spam attack lately.

    M. Ward is great, so is that Chinese Translation video, hadn’t seen it yet. Thanks for the link jerseycynic.

I haven’t picked up that Jolie Holland record last year, but her previous album “Escondida” was fabulous. This song from the new album sounds great too.

I found the Sunn 0))) & Boris collaboration to be a bit disappointing. Maybe I was expecting the wrong thing, but I prefer their solo stuff, especially the Boris solo stuff. It was interesting to hear the contribution of Jesse Sykes on this album though. Her new album “Like Love Lust” should be great, would have fitted in nicely in your list.

  6. squashed says:

I think escondida is Jolie’s greatest album. Her third is a bit too slow in some part, probably it’s just a matter of taste. But Springtime and crush in the ghetto are very sweet songs. I love them.

Boris and friends. I am not sure if I like them because they have more than that great “huge texture” trick heh…

I suppose I have to wait until somebody pick up their style and do something more.

bubbachups — I read that your interest in music is all over the place, just like myself. you mentioned bluegrass to hiphop

    Do you like the
    Dittybops

in particular “angel with attitude” video and the bops on greg ferguson and conan shows are great. Actually, they all are. wonderful musicians — harmony like i’ve never heard before!

    enjoy

  8. Bubbachups says:

No I hadn’t seen them before. I found the contrast between the two girls in the Conan video to be particularly funny. Almost extreme opposites. :-)

I do prefer the more old-timey bluegrass though like Bill Monroe

The song makes its imprint
in the air, making itself felt,
a felt world. Here, there,
the stunned silence

of knowing I will not remember
what I heard;

futures that will never happen,
a fluidity we cannot achieve
except as a child
creating possibility.

This is the untranslatable song
hidden in the earth.
