into the forest

Yö metsän suojassa
(A night sheltered by forest)

Suopursujen tuoksussa

kanervien keskellä

askelluksesi kohti unen

huomaa suo.

Aamu-usvana

levittäydyt sammaleiden ylle,

jotka huokuvat kauneimpia

lauluja luoksesi.

There is so much noise, there is too much heat

  1. Young Marble Giants - the final day
    (Wanna buy a bridge?, 1980)
  2. Black Box recorder - the english motorway system
    (The facts of life, 2000)
  3. Glass Candy - computer love (Kraftwerk cover)
    (Unreleased demo)
  4. Chromatics - in the city
    (In shining violence, 2007)
  5. Au revoir Simone - fallen snow (teenagers rmx)
    (fallen snow single, 2007)
  6. Klaxons - Golden Skans (Erol Alkan’s ekstra spektral dub)
    (Unreleased)

The Plumber!?

I think it’s time we had some boogie on the motel dont you think? And what better boogie than Classic 70’s Porn Music! this stuff really cracks me up, I cant believe porn had such GREAT soundtracks, I mean, it actually makes me wanna get down and really boogie woogie. I don’t know about you, but when I listen to these songs, all I can imagine is a ‘fashionably’ decorated room, poor dialogue, bell-bottomed-crotch-exposing pants, brown rugs and a sexy black man with an afro that takes up all the screen ready to make ‘beautiful beautiful love’ to a very willing naked woman!

Come on, admit it.. you love this as much as I do!

Classic 70’s Porn Music - Sex World

Classic 70’s Porn Music - Laying Pipe

Classic 70’s Porn Music - Love Muscle

Classic 70’s Porn Music - Bass

Classic 70’s Porn Music - Lounge

Imperial Lounge No.1

On this trip
You’ll learn love today
The time has come to take a dare
Maiden Voyage first affair
Set yourself to cast away

What makes music elegant yet functional? In this case how can sound transforms a place’s ambient as if casting a magic spell. After listening to a lot of harsh pieces, I like returning to well balance pieces to reset my accoustic proportion. Something with craftmanship, precise phrasing, pulsating rythm, gliding lines, warm harmonic movements and of course in chamber size group.

Jazz is the peak of sophisticated modern chamber acoustic.  It comes with organic and delicate arrangement unrivaled for ambient music. It almost resolves all tension between public demand, commercial need and musical drive.

This is the first in a series that I try to explore what is modern lounge, genres interesections, style transition, the balance between practical and music for music sake, finding new list idea. -sq

Back at last…

Back at last! OH YES!!!!! I´ve been having SO much trouble with Wordpress you wouldnt BELIEVE! ARG! It´s been SO frustrating, but thank GOD it´s all over! I’d like to thank my best friend Koala… Koala I love you! you are the best marsupial in the whole whole world! *kissy kissy*

Ok… so… let us re-cap for just a second. I had some fairly good vacations over the winter, although all the family ended up getting mad at each other once again, but like a friend of mine once said “Christmas ain’t ’spose to be happy” I think he was right. But I got myself some amazing new headphones!

I’ve SO many things to share with you all, I’ve been keeping up with all the posts that have been made on the motel and I don’t know where to start, because I’ve got SO much music in my power it’s overwhelming and the other posts have been so good I’m not sure I’ll be able to rise to the occasion, but I’ll try.

I think that given my gleeful mood, I’m gonna start with a little mix of everything, how does that sound?

1. Gang of Four - Ether
2. Apostle of Hustle - My Sword Hand’s in Anger
3. The Low Low’s - Dear Flies, Love Spiders
4. Elefant - Lolita
5. Whitest Boy Alive - Fireworks
6. Lavender Diamond - You Broke My Heart
7. Frogpong - Talk to Me

Jmm… I think that list ended up being a rock list jaja! ok.. I’d like to make a small comment on each of the songs.

+Gang of Four punk quartet hailing from the birthplace of punk, UK. Normally I don’t pay much attention to new punk bands because I hate what punk has become in these late years, but I decided to give these guys a chance and I was surprised to listen to pure punk reminiscent of mohawk era.
+Apostle of Hustle, a mixture of Indie/Tropical/Folk Rock this Canadian based band delivers dynamic songs, like My Sword Hand’s in Anger, that slowly builds up a catchy melody with drums and sweet guitars. A bouncy, juicy song.
+The Low Low’s , this band really blows me away, they’re literally explosive. What I like about them is that their music takes on a beast-like apperance, their guitars with reverb to the max and a hypnotizing voice, it’s a perfect combination for staring at a blank wall imagining spiders writing love letters to flies. They actually remind me a bit of Portishead, I think that’s why I love ‘em.
+Elefant this four piece New York based indie band really gets my feet moving, especially this song, Lolita. I love how their sound is so… New York… they’ve got this whole dirty/bad-boy thing going on that transcends into their songs like saying “We’re cool… now give us a blow-job”.
+Whitest Boy Alive Made in Berlin, this four man group really captivated my dear little heart. I love how their sound is so simple and clean. The guitar sounds light as a feather, the drums are non-pretencious, the keyboard is beatsy and dreamy, and the voice is mellancollic but happy at the same time… what can I say, I just adore them.
+Lavender Diamond I found out about this great sound-machine thanks to an interview given by Devandra Banhart to a magazine… sorry I cannot remember when or where it took place. One thing I DO remember is that they asked Devandra what bands he thought would keep on pushing the musical envelope, and Lavender Diamond were amongst the extensive list, so I looked them up, and boy oh boy was he right. Their sound is pretty hard to describe.. I think you better listen to them yourselves.
+Frogpond is a girl-based band that hail from Missouri (I think), what I find most interesting about these gals, is that, to me, they sound like the female version of Nirvana, especially the lead-vocalist, when I listen to her… I can’t help thinking about a grungy girl with hicking boots, ripped jeans, chaotic hair… and why not? a scruffy 5 day-old beard *giggle*

Peace Is the Only Way

There comes a time when Silence is Betrayal.

The truth of these words is beyond doubt, but the mission to which they call us is a most difficult one. Even when pressed by the demands of inner truth, men do not easily assume the task of opposing their governments policy, especially in a time of war. Nor does the human spirit move without great difficulty against the apathy of conformist thought within ones own bosom.
-Martin Luther King, Silence is Betrayal.

“I Ain’t Going Study War No More”

.1. Martin Luther King - ain’t gonna study war no more
.2. Public Enemy - Pump the Music, Pump the Sound
.3. US3 - Different Rhytms, Different People
.4. Electric Dog House - Generations
.5. Chris’tal - Dis Bonjour A La Dame
.6. Josh Jones Latin Jazz Ensemble - Blues in Havana
.7. Funkcronomicon - Cosmic Slop
.8. 4 Corners - Suavecito

Note: It’s a simple and fun list. I am cramming as many styles as possible while keeping the beat going, saying something but down to earth. I want it to have the feeling of coasting through Brooklyn, the crowd, the sound, the music, the organized chaos. The people. Alive. This is MLK day list. Think peace and spread the words people. We need it bad. -sq

To chant is to song…

c03.jpg

Chants d’Auvergne with Victoria de los Angeles is one of my all time favourite albums. I heard it for the first time around 1999 when EMI were doing their Great Recordings Of The Century reissue series. I was working in Cape Town, doing stock admin and every new item that came in for the first time had to be recorded for the listening database. It took really long for the company that did the recording to come collect the items, so they would end up sitting on my desk for weeks sometimes. One day I hooked up some headphones I found lying around to my PC and started to listen to stuff that had come in. My boss, who was not a man to easily allow hapiness amongst his minions, used to constantly be on my back about it. I stuck to my guns and my headphones and did not live to regret it. In those pre to early days of file sharing I found myself in a fairly priveliged position of listening to many, many new releases. The guy who used to do our classical buying was the coolest. He was a borderline psychotic who was known for breaking up liasons between consenting males while he was cruising the street for action of his own. I thought he was a peach and we became good buddies. He constantly gave me awesome recommendations for stuff to listen to, such as Einojuhani Rautavaara’s Canticus Articus (previously posted) and Chants d’Auvergne. The songs are arrangements of folk pieces from the Auvergne region in the higher southern part of France by Joseph Canteloube. Since Moka is living in Montpellier (in the south of France) I thought it would be a good time to post some tunes from the album. Grey Lagoons has again been called into action for a mix job, inspired, themseves, by the story Brian Eno once told about his inspiration for Music For Airports. Apparently a German friend of his had made him a tape using only the slow movements of Haydn’s late string quartets. Eno described the music on the tape as being in a place and not moving anywhere away from there. The Lagoons were asked to try and achieve a similar sense with this rather luscious music. The lyrics are written in Occitan, which is a language native to parts of the south of France and Catalonia, besides other smaller pockets. Hope you enjoy the mix!

Also featured on today’s blog entry is the first track ever by the Grey Lagoons. It seems that Acid Jazz may have left the mainstream but has lingered within the lagoons, sticking to the rivers and the lakes that it’s used too. The guy talking on the track may sound utterly stoned out of his mind but in fact was quite sober during this recording, but he will still avoid playing it to members of his family due to the fact that they’ll never believe him, and may accuse him of being back on the sauce. The song is still in demo format and will be reworked and reposted in the near future.

Grey Lagoons - Home Pills Demo

P. S. Today I have chosen three tracks for the mighty Moka for www.anothernightonearth.blogspot.com/  . The track The Mexican by Babe Ruth is a Balearic Not Balearic track that was huge this summer in Sweden by some accounts. I thought that one was pretty darn applicable. The Smokin’ O. P.’s track is a cover of Love The One You’re With which has always been my favourite song to cheer me up when I’m homesick or missing someone. The first time I played the song to Mr. Keyz today, he asked me if I wasn’t actually a hippy. The answer to that is yes, first and foremost, all else follows. Lastly there’s Slabo Day by Peter Green, a rare Balearic Not Balearic classic that you don’t see around much these days. ‘Cept around my house. Not bragging or anything. Okay, a bit.
