Tempo di Valse

brendan-moore.JPG

Vincent Gallo - the way it is waltz
(Recordings of music for film, 2002)
Colleen - a little mechanical waltz
(mort aux vaches, 2006)
Soil & Pimp Sessions - Waltz For Goddess
(Pimp Master, 2005)
Otomo Yoshihide’s New Jazz Quintet - Solvent Waltz
(Tails Out, 2004)
Balanescu Quartet - waltz
(angels and insects, 1996)
Antonin Dvorak - tempo di valse
Aram Khachaturian - violin concerto in D minor: andante sostenuto

Simply typing ‘waltz’ on the mp3 player and making a playlist out of it, is, I admit, rather self-indulgent, even for me. But I tried it last night while cleaning the apartment and it worked perfectly so asides not having important things to post at the moment I want to share this songs with you. The list starts on a contemplative, cinematic mood with Vincent Gallo’s beautiful “the way it is waltz” and Colleen’s “a little mechanical waltz” which I think is mainly based on Shostakovich’s waltz piece from the jazz suite, then, shaking up the melancholic tone of the past songs are the incredible Soil & Pimp sessions followed by the free jazz chaos of Otomo Yoshihide’s Quintet and closing the playlist are two of my favorite classical composers, Dvorak and Khachaturian. Unfortunately I don’t have the information on the performers for these last two pieces as I ripped the album back home and I forgot to add the recording’s info so if you can identify them, please be kind and leave us a comment with the information.

a quick note: I don’t think I’ll be able to update the site during the next days as I have two friends from Barcelona visiting me for the weekend and on Monday I’m leaving to Madrid for a week. I’ll try to save a pair of drafts in Sunday for your enjoyment yet I think the motel will be on a brief hiatus as Squashed will be very busy next week and Lotus is in Mexico city for the holidays. Hopefully Bubbachups and Saisai will round the motel and throw some of the exquisite songs rounding their headphones our way but I haven’t talked to them so I can’t promise anything. Anyhow, bear with us, visit the nice people on our sidebar, enjoy your stay at the motel and may you all have a nice weekend.

3. Ramsey Lewis - wade in the water

4. Amy Winehouse - back to black
(Back to black, 2007)
5. Lila Downs - cumbia del mole
(La cantina, 2006)
6. Belle & Sebastian - ease your feet in the sea
(the boy with the arab strap, 1998)
7. Blanket Music - hyperballad (Bjork)
(read: interpreting bjork, 2004)
8. Cibelle - green grass (tom waits)
(the shine of dried electric leaves, 2006)
9. The MDH band & Milla Jovovich - satellite of love (lou reed)
(Million dollar hotel OST, 2000)
10. Jeff Buckley - Lover, you should’ve come over
(Grace, 1993)

+ A sunday morning playlist, recommended while having late coffee and oranges. It’s pretty calm with the exception of the two last tracks perhaps, the former with Milla Jovovich misteriously screaming and gargling like a cat halfway through the song and pretty much ruining the sultry mood of the song and the latter featuring Jeff Buckley’s trademark vocal histrionics. The rest of the playlist is upbeat jazz and pop for the most part. Enjoy.
