It’s ok. I don’t think it’s mind blowing, but I have to listen to it again.)

Oldest they are and the wisest of beasts
so they know at last
how to wait for the loneliest of feasts
for the full repast.
They do not snatch, they do not tear;
their massive blood
moves as the moon-tides, near, more near
till they touch in flood.

Laputa (Skintone Records, 2003)
07. Autechre - Vietrmx21
Tri Repetae++ (Tvt, 1996)
note: I am not so sure about this list. Unlike the first one, this one hasn’t been listened back to back several times, it might not flow as well as the first one. Programmatically, imagine soundtrack for a giant parade in the sky, pinks elephants rolling majestically one by one in front of you. The greatest parade in the universe … When it fails, I think the effect is more simple large open space sonic. There is some part missing, but I don’t have time filling it. Tell me what it needs… (maybe I should listen to it several more time, but don’t have time) So here it is, the second trippy list. I’ll make one more with rare dub mix. I have one fav. song I wanted to post for a long time. k. have fun - sq .
btw, the fund drive is over. (Moka will say something, after she gets out of her mid term exam funk.)

Celestine Ukwu - Okwukwe na Nchekwube (via)
(Nigeria Special: 1970-1976)
A very relaxing track with hints to Cuban Danzón and a very exquisite and almost metronomic slide guitar. Kino from the liner notes: “An extremely popular, deeply philosophical and empowering track, Okwukwe Na Nchekwube (’faith and trust’) was recorded in 1974 by the rising star of the fading Ibo highlife scene. Its message is that everything that has a beginning must have an end. No matter how hard times are, or however difficult or tough the situation you find yourself may be, you must keep going. Better days will come. His lilting, laid-back style, punctuated by vibes and particularly soothing guitar lines, was popular across the country, appealing to both Ibo speakers and non-Ibo speakers alike.”
Extra Golden - Obama
(Hera ma mono / 2007)
Extra Golden are a small conglomerate of indie rock and kenyan benga (half of the musicians hail from indie band ‘golden’ and the other half from the kenyan music scene) . Obama is a joyous praise song to the US presidential candidate, who helped get the Kenyan musicians the visas needed to record this fun, joyful and life-affirming album.
Birigwa - Okusosola Mukule
(Birigwa / 1972)
Recently reissued by Porter records, this little gem of an album was recorded in 1972 by Ugandan born, Birigwa at age 23. I bumped into the album while looking for similar artists to Caetano Veloso, and I have to say I’m extremely pleased with it, this is the sort of music that soundtracks those extremely pleasant and lazy 20 minutes you stay in bed after waking up.
King Sunny Ade & his African beats - Ja Fun Mi (Instrumental)
(Nigeria 70 box set / 2001)
In ‘Ja Fun Mi” Sunny Ade is joined with a freewheeling band of 20+ musicians and he manages to always balance unhurriedness with a pulse. King Sunny Ade has always been a master in balancing both. He pioneered the Nigerian big band style known as juju - a combination of kraut percussions, synths, hypnotic guitar riffs and traditional Yoruba influences with reggae and dub effects - and he was responsible for bringing African music, along with Fela Kuti, to the Western spotlight. (PS: The Nigeria 70 box set is awesome and if you like this sort of music I strongly suggest you to look for it).
Issa Bagayogo - Joola
(Tassoumakan / 2004)
There’s an immense amount of space and rust in Joola, and it’s accomplished by the most simple elements: washes of ghostly voices providing the atmosphere, a looping rhythm in the background, a meandering blues guitar and Issa alternating between singing and speaking with a low seductive voice. A beautiful piece of warm & organic dub.

note: It’s time people. MdM needs some cash to pay for the bling and those pound of stash. This year it’s $136 for the whole next year. I think Moka found some cheap generic love substitute so we can reduce cost. It’s non fattening as well, don’t worry. Taste jsut like real butter. But the side effect of generic substitute of love in mp3 blogging hasn’t been tested. Some genetic mutation might be expected. If you grow another head after listening to MdM this year, don’t panic. It’s to be expected. … I’ll try to keep up with you guys with list. (I think I can squeeze one more, before this drive is over. whew, you guys are sure quick.) - sq.

Hi!
It’s bill time for us over here at the motel and we need the help of everybody out there to reach our $136 goal for this year. To reach our goal we will be doing, once again, our campaign through Dropcash, so everyone of our readers can watch the progress bar go up with every donation and track how much money has been donated through Paypal.
To donate head on over to the Motel de Moka 2008 Funding Drive page and watch the progress bar go up as we get closer to our goal!
Whatever you can give is fully appreciated and don’t worry if you can’t afford to donate, we completely understand. Every kind of support you’d like to give helps, either via email, links or comments. One of the things we value most of all in the motel is the feedback we receive from our readers, so wheter you decide to donate or not please write some words now and then, they’re always very appreciated.
Thank you all in advance for all of your help!

… consumer spending slump and tightening credit markets are unleashing a widening wave of bankruptcies in American retailing, prompting thousands of store closings that are expected to remake suburban malls and downtown shopping districts across the country … (NYT, 4/15 ‘08)

note: A list about dread. Ever notice how an empty mall has that dreadful melancholy in it? The echoes the empty stores the sparse traffic and dim lighting? As a kid you really don’t understand what, but you could sense the malaise, almost fear. Something big is coming and this is not just another day. I thought if I dig my old collections and combine it in weird ways I can replicate the mood. Sort of bitter lost and slight resignation. K. I’ll compile album blurbs on comment section since all the albums are classic. Too lazy to do it right now. This is the beginning of more rock flavor posts.

note: Amusing little list. I poached from a bigger list originally made for listening while your head is seeing purple haze and going psychadelic. (There was a conversation about this somewhere on the net. really. ) I made it smaller with prettier songs, more listenable and amusing. It’s been awhile since I made a list I really want to listen for long period, so this is it. Soft with various small scattered textures and words. The ECM’s and Bill Evans are heavenly. I thought it might be good for traveling, but I think it’s too delicate. I doubt most of these songs can survive anywhere but quiet room and high quality speaker. (car, plane, train, noise reduction headphone, stuffy ears simply aren’t music friendly.) But I am picky. I’ll do another variation on this purple haze theme for fun. Buy Bill Evans‘ Waltz for Debby. It’s a must have. -sq.
