Travelling without moving

When I emerge, nobody looks like me anymore. Most of all you. Or least. Isn’t it strange how either one fits?
You can do that with words, use one for the other.

  8. Arc Lab - Versions
    No Spectre (n5MD / 2007)

Note: The idea behind this set of songs was to create an atmosphere where every sounds seems active without really doing anything. Movement without motion. Motion without movement… something like that. I chose songs that could be alternately be used for either physical or mental activity. At moderate volume the sound is not distracting, but on a good set of headphones the wall of sound will crush every kind of thought around you and keep you disjointed and unfocused enough that you’ll feel like drifting out from conciousness.

I read the title and I say “where do she has gone?”… so I jump to the link that declare “electronica” and beside it I see there is a related post: I suddenly say “hmmmm!”… then I play the first song and a smile opens itself wide.
I can’t wait to write a comment: the atmosphere of the two first songs reminds me “Gui Boratto” and “Pantha du Prince”. Women must be the writers or the inspirations of these songs; Germany seems to be far.
The others songs are almost to be listened.

I’m not able to play the songs number 4,6,7,8 … :(

I have read your note: I remember I had the same sensation listening the first album of Royksopp “Melody A.M.”; I used to listen to this cd during the hardest houres of my work.

I’ve really been enjoying these mixes, but often can’t download all of the songs. On this one, I could only get #1 and #5. The rest just take me to your 404 page…

Jungle and Jeremy: I see the problem, it’s happening when you attempt to download the songs from the single post instead of the main page. I don’t understand why this is happening as we didnt seem to have this problem before. Try downloading the songs directly from the main page http://www.moteldemoka.com see if you dont have any problem. I’ll try to fix this tomorrow.

    Thanks for the notice boys.

Thank you! You’re right — works fine of the main page. I’ve probably done that before without realizing it, because sometimes they all work fine, and the next time they don’t.

Also, I’ll have to make more of an effort to leave comments, because I’ve been getting so much great music here and not being thankful enough.

Already fixed. After breaking my head trying to find the root of the problems I noticed it’s a syntax error on the file adress, on the single posts it appeared for example as (http://www.moteldemoka.com/2008/11/26/travelling-without-moving/moka/song.mp3) when it should be reading only as (http://www.moteldemoka.com/moka/song.mp3) not that you should care about it but I’m posting it here so sq notices it when posting. The way to solve it is by writing the full address to the file when publishing a post. Will doublecheck from now on.

Thanks once again for the notice.

What a great selection. It makes me feel so dreamy ! I only knew Flying Lotus, but the others are really interesting. Thank you for making us discover all these great tracks !
I was wondering : do you know Deceptikon ? He creates great soundscapes too.

    BEAUTIFUL!

Thanks Moka for this amazing playlist. This is why I love moteldemoka. Hectic at work, it took only four songs and I’m relaxed, drifting…

Love your post. I find as a rule of thumb that your current music selections i.e., from 2008 are usually weaker than anything you post pre-1999. I realize it’s easier to develop a better sense of taste over time, but I often reject (?) anything too modern that you serve up. Ugh, sorry that sounds bad. Sorry. Like your blog.

  11. squashed said, November 27, 2008 @ 12:47 pm

    heh. too modern? come on…

but yes. Classic rock form is hard to reinvent, all the basic sound are established. So if one would to post popular item, it would be just redo of major styles in the past 5 decades.

..then the question becomes, why not simply dig the old masters?

so, the new guys with their new sound needs a chance too. (not that we don’t do retro.)

wikkid! wot a wunnerfull s´lecshun! just had snow which had disappeared overnight, the icy wind bites at the neck an we´re tumbling headlong into winter…..an home is where the hearth is, the flicker flame a tremble, hands warmed round a mug of tea and the nite goes on forever…………..

I would have added “meum” at the end of the playlist (and I would have dropped “testament”); the first track reminds me the gingle that old clocks play to announce each new hour and Meum is the clock ring that wakes you up.

A question: a good playlist must be circular (those playlist that you can play continously without havings jumps od the sound) or it must have a beginning and a end (those playlist with a “capital letter” song at the beginning and a “full stop” song at its end) ?

  15. squashed said, November 27, 2008 @ 4:28 pm

A good playlist is one that can communicate musical idea. circular or directional are just functional forms, whichever work to underline an idea.

If it is circular (endless loop), then it should go in nice loop. Usually, ambient mood are easier to do. One can play with a lot of idea with minimal texture change, it isn’t as boring to repeat more subtle texture over and over.

A to B type of list usually work better if one wants a bridge, changing mood, transition, or directional transition.. Loud and harsh style usually work better in straight list. It’s too overwhelming to hear it endlessly.

But the big point is still about idea and fun listening. specifically for blog posting, there is form limitation. We can’t post too many songs in single post. On top of that, nobody has time to listen to 15-20 songs in a row in one blog post. So it’s moot.

Compare this to party list… 2 hour of continuous beat, or driving playlist…3-4 hours of variety entertainment… or bedroom list… etc..

btw, there are tricks to make A to B list sounds like a loop. for eg. if you insert “cover songs”, that will make listener recall the beginning of the list. This despite the list not structured as loop.

My idea of good looping list is one that is design with periodicity. usually I put 2 period, with 2 or 3 songs 3 minute each. The big loop is as one unifying theme (eg, sound, lyric, narrative or one key transition). and there is the smaller repeats. (I like style or key change repeat. ABB-ABB .. or ABB-ACC etc … )

    whatever is interesting.

Are you speaking about sonnets? :)

The English or Shakespearean sonnet, developed first by Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey (1517-1547), consists of three quatrains and a couplet–that is, it rhymes abab cdcd efef gg.

Thanks for the answer, it was very interesting to read it.
Here you are how MDM creates human sparks.

oh wow, such a lovely list and just in my favour right now.

i think ‘To Rococo Rot - Non Song’ would fit in here perfectly.
In case you don’t know them check their 2004 album ‘Hotel Morgen’ out. In my opinion of the best electronic records.
