Three Lists for Soulful Night

Este que ves, engaño colorido,
que, del arte ostentando los primores,
con falsos silogismos de colores
es cauteloso engaño del sentido;

éste, en quien la lisonja ha pretendido
excusar de los años los horrores,
y venciendo del tiempo los rigores
triunfar de la vejez y del olvido,
- Soneto CXLV, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz.

Introducing…Rubén González (1997)

note: A place holder series that I know I won’t be able to finish. keep your fingers cross for more tho’. The entire theme is somewhere between night dance and ambient, except with darker melody. Something fuller than usual. This one come with mainly cuban texture with jazz and various other island tunes. Not a danceable list, almost annoying change of beat pattern in fact, but they are all dance tracks. Ruben Gonzalez. I like how he leaves one layer of repeated chords over melody giving an impression that the piano itself humming its own beat. The whole thing is thick with rhythms, all slow but never sparse. Roiling elegantly. Repeating chords after chords, then melodies, over and over. It’s about dance and how the body moves, but in song. Soulful song. The color of night.

    This is a great playlist. Full of lovely music. But I must say António Chainho is portuguese and plays a Portuguese 12 strings guitar. His compositions have no relation to the latin american and cuban tradition.
    The Tempo Trio was a Brazilian group that played mostly Bossa Nova.

    yeah Chainho probably is the odd one, but it makes a nice opening lick. I love it. Probably from all track, Bajofondo would be the only electronic/mix sampling one. Tempo trio, I thought it’s an interesting bridge between jazz and brazillian feel Gonzales is doing. A quick play. Admitedly I could have pick more obvious tracks from classics blue notes. But was too lazy to dig.

    But it is true the list is not completely in latin mode and cuban beat. Think ofit more as clone of Fredico Aubele’s Pan Americana down tempo album.
