I. Some of our favorite slices of pop music this decade. They sway with sensuous delight, get stuck in our brain for days and bring us big stupid smiles on our faces whenever we listen to them.
II. Probably my favorite segment on this post. These five artists share a love for deep and engaging textures, but never sacrifice melody or structure for it, as many other IDM acts tend to do.
III. We proceed to cool things off with a segment of what could be defined as electronic chamber pop. Songs which seem like they were specifically designed to be played in small home speakers at the laziest hours of the day. Most of the time this is how I imagine perfection in pop music; Antiseptic, calculated, bright, colorful. Like a brand new toy or a clean apartment.
IV. In a similar note to the past segment, only less cool and cynical, more infatuated and naïve. I admit the playlist feels a tad sketchy in construction - the vibrant psychedelia of the last three songs against the detached, melancholic vibe of the first two - but let’s just pretend it’s supposed to reflect on the confused eagerness and crushing desire within the music. A story of love lost and found… or something something.

have been surfing the web for some time now, but your ‘tracks of the 2000’s’ is the best i’ve seen so far… pure awesomeness!
discovered your blog today and I am curious what will amaze me in the future!
gebruenn, gebruenn is sooo good ;)
This is the best decade compilation I’ve heard so far. The artwork is lovely too. Thanks.
I agree. The lists just keep getting better and better.
Like they’re supposed to.
A-a-arigato.
Agreed. I’m repeatedly stunned at what impeccable taste you / your contributors have. Motel has become a regular stop for me each time I jump online. I sure appreciate your work!
Nice list and I love the variety of everything you do. One comment on this list - Black Cat was on Broadcast’s “Tender Buttons” (2005), not “The noise made by people”.!
Thank you! This is like coming home…but better!!!!

could king biscuit time sound any more like the beta band? not that that’s a bad thing.
this is my favorite entry/part yet.
I’ve been relying on your blog more & more for my listening, these lists are freakin fantastic. Thank you so much.
nice list
is great to see looper get some recognition
Really awesome lists. For no particular reason, I started with List #7–ENJOYED THE HECK OUT OF IT–and am now working on 10. I have been introduced (and in many cases, re-introduced) to some sensational sounds. Thanks so very much.
Wow thank you so much. Discovering new AWESOME music makes me happy. :)
Had an experience at military survival school where we were “detained” for a lovely evening where obnoxious music was played on a loop for hours at a time. The background guitar from only the chorus of “If I ever feel better” by Phoenix was looped for hours. I have been looking for some of that music for months now; I thought it was created exclusively for the military until I stumbled across that song. Now that I hear the song in its entirety, it’s pretty sweet. But I almost messed myself when I heard the song get to the the hook for the first time.
lol.
How torture music work is to disorient. Pitting “thought flow” against cut/pieces of music (beat/melody, etc). It’s not much different that somebody whining or yelling something nasty. Ones mind tries to make sense and respond to it. but cut out music is like incomplete puzzle, there aren’t enough information to make sense of them. they are out of context. So ones thought go in loop, frustrated. (there is the deafening loudness, but that’s different effect)
The way to handle it is to tune it out as regular background noise. I mean, how many people obsessed with traffic sound on the street or loud TV next room despite being pretty random and loud, but a mind put them in context. They are simply background noise of modern life.
Another way it works is playing something that one doesn’t like. (wrong context) This one is actually harder to tune out. I am pretty sure it’s easy to make MdM crews go bonker just by playing regular pop music loop. I can’t stand badly placed “wet” reverb for eg. I doubt metal will do anything to MdM crew. They are just boring, loud elevator music.
most people don’t like dissonant and moving asymmetric beat, tho’ they are exotic in some circle. Everything seems in the wrong place and out of it.
interesting thoughts. I found myself imagining where the song might go, but then it was right back to the beginning after a few bars. Frustrating indeed. I believe I could stay sane through anything if I were allowed to sleep, however. I can’t speak for everyone but enough sleep deprivation would get me to say my sweet grandmother is the devil.
