Island Music

“27th day. Have rested and am moving south. All is well. Kerans.”

So he left the lagoon and entered the jungle again, within a few days was completely lost, following the lagoons southward through the increasing rain and heat, attacked by alligators and giant bats, a second Adam searching for the forgotten paradises of the reborn sun.

J.G. Ballard, The Drowned World (1962).

It’s turning to summer in Melbourne, but a summer plagued by long periods of rain, flooding, and humidity. The nights are disturbed by noisy insects, and the sun sets late and rises early. I’ve been playing with a old drum machine from the early 70s, and the tinny ‘rumba’ and ‘bossanova’ beats it spits out provide a rhythmic backdrop to these sunny soul/disco/exotica songs. Nite Jewel is worth a mention here, effortlessly making music that complements an otherwise 80s dominated playlist.

still alive squashed, the flooding was fine around melbourne city, the north of the country really received most of the water. Drowned World is such an appropriate novel right now though…

i’m going to try and post more regularly…

There are some nice gems in here. Is that recording of “Fogo do Sol” a recording of Valle himself, or is it someone else covering?

  12. Andras Fox says:

hey crabbypuss – i’ll get around to posting some new stuff soon – me and sui zhen have almost finished an EP which should be due for release in the coming months. i’ll be featuring stuff off it soon….

and sneaky g – the recording is valle himself, not sure who produced the album, but it’s brilliant – another track ‘estrelar’ has an amazing filmclip of valle driving around in a convertible staring at half naked exercising women – gold.

    thanks for commenting!

The song makes its imprint
in the air, making itself felt,
a felt world. Here, there,
the stunned silence

of knowing I will not remember
what I heard;

futures that will never happen,
a fluidity we cannot achieve
except as a child
creating possibility.

This is the untranslatable song
hidden in the earth.
