06. Motorpsycho + Jaga Jazzist Horns - Doffen Ah Um
In The Fishtank (In the Fishtank, 2003)

note: Two things about this list. One I made this super loud list that my ears are still ringing after a full day. And this list is the anti-dote. Two. Why am I having 80’s nostalgia? I don’t even like the 80’s music. (I thought the sound of synth destroy everything and make people dumb. 80’s detroit techno is too hard to listen to. And they are everywhere in 80’s pop music. don’t get me started about metal.) But here I am making this list while thinking what 80’s could sound like had they just more like 2008. Bigger texture, softer and the synth sound better. This is definitely a misplaced nostalgia. Oh and check out new Calexico album. (don’t know when they will come out. But it should be good. k. have fun. This list is soft and alluring. I promise.

O, es nada, cosas de mujeres

I was very influenced by the makeup of Claudia Cardinale in a film where she had very dark eyeliner. As soon as we hit on that for Penélope, everything changed. It was also very important to have an ample cleavage enhanced by strategically placed medallions, because that’s one of the key images of Spanish motherhood, and motherhood is one of the key themes of this film. It was also very important that this woman have an ample arse. The arse is a symbol of optimism. I’m really sorry for those who do not possess a bottom but they can always add something to it. The only false thing that we did was to construct a new arse for her, so that she would have this shape. It wasn’t just about the physical thing, it was also about the spirit of the person: Penélope had trained in dance, and so tends to walk upright, very much in the air. But for the character, we wanted someone very grounded, somebody weighed down by life. And an ample arse helps you to be weighed down and be grounded. So rehearsals are part of all this. - Pedro Almodóvar interview

note: Small movie note and an evening list. Just watched Volver by Almodovar. My quick take: very cheerful screen color as usual. everything come out in high color contrast in that film. Amazing. He then does his magic describing strong characters, always woman with Almodovar, with maximum impact. Dialogs are just enough, telling complex stories without being too many cinematic devices. (I absolutely hate sappy music in dramatic dialog.) All in all, a nice mid week evening movie.

about the list: Only slightly related with the post, it’s evening pop rock, mostly recent releases.

02. Explosions In The Sky - Look Into The Air
How Strange, Innocence (Temporary Residence, 2000)

06. Lemon Jelly - The Staunton Lick
LemonJelly.KY (2001)
07. Electroputas - Piano Blooms
Paino Blooms [EP] (The Social Registry, 2004)

note: Happy 4th everybody. This is a technical list, I really can’t find anything that resonate today. So something pretty and grand, but on a mechanical side in term of list making. Incidentally that Robbers on High Street 2005 album is highly recommended. I keep finding it a nice weekend lyrical rock. I think it’s the song form.

Counter Seducing Fake Freedom

That’s a logical impossibility. Policies and opinions about them are
determined by what is known or plausibly believed, not by what is
discovered afterwards. That should be elementary. - theory-frankfurt-school
mailing list archive / chomsky

Preterition is an artifice, pretending discretion when something is said with total clarity and indiscretion. For example: “If I were not obligated to keep military secrets, I would tell all of you of the large amount of armaments that we have so that you would feel even more confidence that our victory is assured.”

Communication is a way to ask and give the answer to the same question. For example: “If they show disrespect for the ministers of God, will they respect us, simple citizens? Never.”

Rhetorical questions are a way in which one shows perplexity or inability to say something, only as an oratorical recourse. For example: “I am only a peasant and can tell you little. I know little and I will not be able to explain to you the complicated things of politics. Therefore, I talk to you with my heart, with my simple peasant’s heart, as we all are.”

Litotes is a form of meaning a lot by saying little. For example: “The nine commanders have stolen little, just the whole country.”

Irony consists of getting across exactly the opposite of what one is saying. For example: “The divine mobs that threaten and kill, they are indeed Christians.” - Psy-Op in Guerilla Warfare

There is, of course, a counter trend to this commercially motivated acquiesence in, or indifference to, ideas. A general suspicion of, or self-imposed censorship of, anti-capitalist views provides a considerable degree of protection for the system, the power of capital serving as the same indirect source of discipline in the ideological world as it does in the allocation of scarce resources. Nonetheless, no social formation is without its means of self-defense against hostile or subversive ideas. What is striking about capitalism is the willingness to accept potentially subversive influences once they are denatured by becoming commodities. - Fri, 11 Nov 94 10:56:24 EST alt.postmodern

A list for myself. It begins simple enough with assertion that “Coldplay” is good. That bothers me. But why is that statement bothering me? Shouldn’t it be like any other statement such as ‘I like vanilla ice cream’ or ’sountering around a park’? I suppose it has something to do with my idealized version of music trend. That there is a bigger narrative one should follow and aware. A work must answer to music in general, not simply a momentary marketing effort. Or probably it’s not even that grand and glorious. More like something bumps an old scab and makes me want to pick on it. Reminding me, how fucking human we are. We like sweet little crappy lies.

So, I present you “my sweet little crappy lies”, that I know something better than Coldplay. There should be something else after U2’s rock/post-punk sound. (It’s like a bloody counter revolution. And the way it has been working, it should achieve the opposite effect. Maybe you will like Coldplay too after this? Or maybe some form of post-rock will finally make ways? Lyric and repeating phrasing are so mind sucking.)

PS. These are long post-rock songs. listen and download it if you like. Don’t repeat streaming too much to reduce server load.

Purple splotches blossoming on my chest like clouds

Ah, that would be the life: simple responses
to big worries. I could yell at my food to tell it
I was coming to kill it & I’d let people know I loved them
by hitting myself, purple splotches blossoming
on my chest like clouds. Anybody could see
there was something inside that hurt so much I wanted it out.

I’ve noticed this type of raw, fuzzy sound has been slowly infecting the fashion scene for the past months, constantly appearing on runways, tv commercials and boutique soundtracks with more and more frequency. I wonder: is it a beautiful accident provoked by the french’s growing interest in electro and garage punk? Have young music lovers just had more than their fare share of decaffeinated downtempo that older generations embraced and feel the urge to unclog their eardrums? Is it the time of the season? Is it the bypass product of an uneven combination of loneliness, social impotence and heatstrokes? Either way, I dig it. Been playing hours of my garage collection constantly during this hiatus and I find it strange that I have yet to hear a complaint from my acquaintances even when they tend to be very picky when it comes to music. It must be the time for me to move to edgier taste.

Shopping in Time of Recession

Perhaps nothing epitomizes the Wonderland-like quality of the Japanese recession like the giant orange Hermes box in the heart of Ginza, Tokyo’s most exclusive shopping district.

For Hermes International, the building-sized box, complete with signature orange packaging and brown ”ribbon,” is not merely a marketing tool but a reflection of the company’s confidence that even in bad times, there will be plenty of Japanese willing to pay hundreds of thousand of yen for one of its handbags. Such confidence is hardly misplaced.

Sure, unemployment is at record levels, corporate earnings are sinking, bankruptcies are at a record high, investment is down and the banking system is at the brink of disaster. But luxury goods retailers in Japan are thriving, even as overall consumer spending has continued to fall. - NYT (1998)

Feeling Decadent

01. The New Frontiers - The Day You Fell Apart
Mending (The Militia group, 2008)
02. The Long Blondes - Here Comes The Serious Bit
Couples (Rough Trade Us, 2008)
03. Tilly and the Wall - Pot Kettle Black
O (Team Love Records, 2008)
04. French Kicks - Love in the Ruins
Swimming (Vagrant Records, 2008)
05. Pomegranates - Whom/Who
Everything Is Alive (Lujo Records, 2008)
06. Panda Riot - Like Flowers At Night
She Dares All Things (Panda Riot, 2007)

note: Feeling a bit decadent. This is a standard mood list, near shoegazer sort of texture. I like the minor key tension vs. up beat walking tempo. Music for shopping in time of recession. Hey, at least the music is good, in dark and edgy sort of way. But nothing too removed from known formula. Which could ruin the balance. At any rate, somebody better snap this site out of slower tempo. I need something with beat! :D (I don’t know where everybody is, except jungle. Probably they all die from heat stroke. Either that or baking themselves somewhere in Majorca’s beach. ) Go out and have a decadent life today…
