Oscar Peterson (1925-2007)

It’s the group sound that’s important, even when you’re playing a solo.

Oscar Peterson passed away today at the age of 82. It’s a great lost. He is one of the greatest piano player that I like. Something about how he carries his tune. He plays very fast, yet delicate and never out of balance or screaming. Sort of like Art Tatum meets hard-bop with Canadian breeze mixed in it. Timeless.

We miss you Oscar Peterson. Thank you for all the great tunes.

This really put a damper on my Christmas. I couldn’t make it to a show he played here a few months ago and now I’m devastated.

It is a great loss but 82 years is a great run considering he had been playing jazz since he was 20. Of what I’ve heard my favorite work of his is “oscar peterson trio playing with Clark Terry” (1964) but his catalogue is extraordinary in size and range so I’ve always been too scared to pick any of his albums after 1965.

What a loss. Rememeber seeing him years ago and watching him caress the ivories was pure bliss. A great loss will be truly missed by real music fans.
