Gently Sailing Toward the Future
July 26, 2009 at 11:26 am

In sullen light of the inauspicious day.
Now, free, by hazard’s quirk, from the common ill
Knocking our brothers down, we strike a stance
Most mock-heroic, to cloak our waking awe
At this rare rumpus which no man can control :
Meek and proud both fall; stark violence

note: MdM has been slacking off in rock department. So here is the first of short series exploring punk rock. Ever hear that old claim about rock being the step sister of music. All lyric and surface, but structurally not very satisfying. Well, here are several recent pieces that has complex rhythm structure while keeping the compactness of rock as popular music. I like ‘Sholi’. Its steady graceful lyricism on top of math rock like sound famous of Touch and Go records. It has wildly varying tempo and rhythm, I promise you. The rest are a homage of classic punk sound and structure with a nod to free jazz. Maybe what I am hoping to find is a combination of easy to digest popular culture, rock lyricism and wildly futuristic free jazz. Yes, it’s impossible, but I’ll give it a try anyway. The second one will draw tear, I promise.

squashed, you my man, this shit is freaky enough for me, out there, love it. my wife probably won’t like any of it, say it’s not music, fuck her, right. well, she’s not here to hear that, sorry.
good list, fantastic list.
wait a minute, squashed, you’re not a woman are you? if you are I love you.
Heya Bill,
I am a guy. Tho’ I am always surprise if I post more lyrical and less tempramental list that people then think it should only be done by a girl. There was a time when I try to build crude musical stereotyping just to see if I can create sort of “persona”. But it crumbled after a few tries. Short of overtly ideological, most recent pieces by modern artists are all over the place. (lyricism, rhythm preference, keys, tempo, etc.)
There are general preference of this or that demographic or group of people. But for “gender” in general male/female, it doesn’t work very well.
anyway, glad you like it. mathrock usually isn’t everybody’s cup of coffe. …
